How Badge and Boots collects, uses, and protects information when you search for discounts, submit an offer, or join our newsletter.

Last updated: October 24, 2026 We never sell your data

1. Overview

Badge and Boots is a community directory of military, veteran, and first responder discounts, primarily serving the greater Houston and Galveston Bay area. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

By using the site you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

2. Information We Collect

You give us directly

Name, email address, and any details you type into the newsletter form, the Submit a Discount form, or the Suggest an Edit form — including business names, addresses, and links you provide to help us verify an offer.

Location you choose to share

A ZIP code you type, or a browser location you approve, used only to calculate and sort distances. Details in section 3.

Technical information

Browser type, device type, referring page, and general usage patterns collected automatically by our hosting provider for security and performance.

Stored on your device

Your last-searched location and filter preferences, kept in your browser's local storage. Details in section 5.

3. Location & ZIP Searches

The directory works best when it knows roughly where you are, so it can show offers nearest to you. Here is exactly what happens:

  • ZIP codes are converted to approximate coordinates to sort listings by distance. We do not associate a ZIP code with your name, email, or any other identifier.
  • "Use My Location" only runs after you grant browser permission. The coordinates never leave your browser except to a driving-distance service to compute mileage, and they are never sent to our servers or stored in a database.
  • Precise coordinates are rounded to about three decimals (roughly a city-block level of precision) before being stored in your browser, so a saved location does not reveal your exact address.
  • You can clear it at any time with the "Clear filters" control, which removes the saved location from your browser.

4. How We Use Information

  • To show and sort discounts by distance from your chosen location.
  • To review and verify discounts submitted by the community before publishing.
  • To send the newsletter you asked for, including occasional sponsored offers we clearly label as such.
  • To respond when you contact us or report an incorrect listing.
  • To keep the site secure, prevent abuse, and fix technical problems.

We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you, and we do not build advertising profiles from your location searches.

5. Cookies & Local Storage

We use browser local storage — not advertising cookies — for a small number of practical purposes:

What Why How long
Saved location Remembers your ZIP or approximate coordinates so distances load instantly on your next visit. Until cleared
Driving-distance results Held in memory only for the current visit to avoid repeat lookups. Never written to disk. Session only
Hosting & security Set by our hosting provider to serve pages securely and block abuse. Short-lived

You can clear this data at any time through your browser's settings. Blocking local storage will not break the site — distances just won't be remembered between visits.

6. Third-Party Services

A few services outside Badge & Boots help the site function. Each receives only what it needs:

Google Routes API

Used to calculate driving distances between your chosen location and each listing. Only coordinates are sent — no name, email, or account information.

Email delivery provider

Delivers newsletter and form confirmation emails. Receives your email address and message content so it can be sent and its delivery tracked.

Hosting provider

Serves the site and keeps standard server logs for security and performance.

Facebook Group

Clicking through to our community group takes you to Facebook, where Facebook's own privacy policy applies.

7. Sharing & Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Ever.

We share information only in these narrow circumstances:

  • With the service providers listed above, strictly to operate the site.
  • When a submitted discount is published, the business details you supplied (name, address, offer terms, public links) become visible on the site. Your personal name and email are not published.
  • If required by law, subpoena, or to protect the safety and rights of our visitors.
  • If the site is ever transferred to a new owner, in which case this policy would continue to apply until updated.

8. Data Retention

Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Discount and edit submissions are kept while we verify them and, if published, for as long as the listing remains live. Location data saved in your browser stays until you clear your filters or your browser storage. We delete information we no longer need.

9. Your Choices & Rights

Unsubscribe

Every newsletter email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and it takes effect immediately.

Access or delete

Email us to request a copy of what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it. We'll respond within 30 days.

Turn off location

Decline the browser prompt, or use a ZIP code instead. The directory still works without precise location.

Clear saved data

Use "Clear filters" on the directory, or clear site data in your browser settings at any time.

10. Children's Privacy

The site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, and forms are submitted over an encrypted connection. No system is perfectly secure, so please avoid sending sensitive personal details — such as Social Security numbers, DD-214 copies, or financial information — through our forms. We never ask for them.

12. Changes to This Policy

If we make a meaningful change to how we handle your information, we will update the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, mention it in the newsletter. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.

13. Contact Us

Questions about this policy or want to access, correct, or delete your personal information? Contact us and we'll help.

This page describes our current practices in plain language. It is not legal advice, and we recommend having a qualified attorney review it for your specific jurisdiction and business structure.
